25-31 and 16-46 - PC-Plus
Customer Review: By "Craig", Home Theater Spot Member
I am a longtime VMPS user ( 2 original subs owned for 8 years ) and Velodyne ( I have owned 2 of the 18 inch subs... over the past 3 years ) owner. I actually heard about SVS subs on the Harmonic Discord site... which is the one that VMPS owners use quite frequently. There seems to be quite a bit of competition between the owners of both company's gear on both sites.
3 weeks ago I decided that my current Velodynes were not the sub for our theatre room. It is 25 by 24 feet, nine foot ceilings. I had both Velos set up in the room, and my wife was not very happy with the look of two big black boxes. She spent 3 months working with contractors designing the room. The system ( besides the velos ) includes a Denon 5800 Receiver, Klipsch Belle mains, and smaller Klipsch center and 4 Klipsch surrounds...
I contacted SVS after looking at a few positive reviews on ecoustics.com. I was interested in the CS Ultra line. Ron S. suggested that I look at the new PC Plus line. The 20-39 PC Plus to be exact. He thought I would really like them, even over the Velodynes. At the same time Tom V. was telling me some ideas on why I should keep the Velos. Strange for a company to conflict itself like that. But I did admire Tom's attempts to help me, rather than just trying to sell me! After I explained my WAF ( wife acceptance factor ) dilemma to Tom, and that I was looking for subs which would be unseen behind the Klipsch Belles, I ordered the 25-31 PC Plus, in the hope that I would not give up too much in the deep bass to the Velos. Both Ron and Tom thought I would not be disappointed with the SVS.
What a Pleasant Surprise ! The SVS completely blew the Velos away ! They are deeper, faster, and much more powerful. We have measured 112 db peaks from a pair at 18 feet away at 25 hz - Amazing ! They also sound better, we are watching movies over again, and are hearing things we never heard before.
Movies we have watched ?
1. Phantom Menace - The pod race is a new experience
2. Titan AE - When the Ice starts breaking... WOW !
3. Armageddon - The entire movie is a bass feast
4. Independence Day - The Alien Attack !
5. Fifth Element.... and several others
At the time we ordered the 25-31 PC+, I was planning on putting the Velos with my Infinity IRS Sigma based two channel system in our basement "DAD" stereo room. After the experience with the "little" SVS, I sold the Velos, and ordered two 16-46 PC+ for the basement. Once again, I am just amazed ! Even my wife has been listening to these and exclaiming she never has heard a system like this before! Pink Floyd's The Wall as I never thought possible!
The differences between SVS and either the Velos or VMPS ?
1. They go deeper
2. They play louder
3. They are FAR more musical
4. They are VERY easy to move around
5. They are easier to hook up
Comments on the VMPS ? - They are nice subs, but the Velos are better, so I spent most of this on the comparison between the SVS and Velos. Subjectively, the one 16-46 PC+ outguns the two VMPS handily !For $875 including an amp, that is a bargain.
Conclusion ? ... When I ordered the first pair of SVS, I fully expected to be sending them back, and convincing my wife we could live with the Velos in the theatre room, and the VMPS in the basement. The Velos are gone, and the VMPS are being given to my nephew for his college system. I would not hesitate to grab SVS over any subwoofer I have ever heard. The help you can get from Ron S. and Tom V. is also a pleasant surprise. I received e-mails on weekends from them ! Great company with an outstanding product !!!
