FAQ's

Want to know just how stressful a modern DVD can be to a subwoofer? Check out the below. Few movies today can push a subwoofer like “The Phantom Menace”.

If you are an SVS user, this movie is one reason we recommend MORE subwoofers than you think you’ll ever need! Check your sub calibration and let this one rip! If you need a refresher on reading waterfall charts, look here.

The new and improved “THX Intro” – 3D Waterfall Chart

This is a subwoofer killer! The upper portion of the chart shows the shattering “sphere”. The lower portion of the chart (which is later in time) shows the tell-tale THX reverse frequency sweep-down, which plays out during the trailer. But with this new version of the intro the sweep peaks out at 18hz (THX used to peak out in the 33-35hz range). That plus high amplitude (that is, it’s recorded “loud”) of this clip means your subwoofer needs to be robust, and a “too high” calibration might push it to the limit, and beyond. We’ve not seen a DVD intro that thrashes a subwoofer like this one!

THX Trailer – Spectrum chart

Examine this color-coded chart closely and you can see how it correlates to the 3D “Waterfall” chart of the same trailer above.

Chapter 9, Time 18:18 -- "There's always a bigger fish" 3D Waterfall chart

You can see the two loud waves as the small fish hits the ship...then as the large fish hits the small fish. Extremely strong bass to 10Hz!

Chapter 9, Time 18:18 -- "There's always a bigger fish" Spectrum chart

The two “bursts” on the left are of the small fish striking, the burst on the right (later in time of course) is the big fish.

Chapter 20, Time 1:01:46 -- Explosion in tunnel during the pod race. 3D Waterfall chart

You can make out 3 distinct steps to the waterfall below (again, top to bottom, as time and the scene proceeds).

  1. The explosion
  2. The fire rushing through the tunnel
  3. The pods exiting the tunnel
Notice again too, very strong bass to 10Hz, and below! Ever wonder why calibration of your sub is important?

Chapter 20, Time 1:01:46 -- Explosion in tunnel during the pod race. Spectrum chart

The 3 closely knit bursts on the left are all 3 tunnel blasts described above. The lone burst to the right is the bass spectrum when the “sniper” hits one pod right after escape from the tunnel.

The Phantom Menace -- Scene comparison. 2D Frequency chart

RED = THX Intro
BLUE = Bigger fish
BLACK = Tunnel explosion

Death by subwoofer!
