Questions And Answers:
Tell us about your channel, Theater at Home?
I love home theaters! My channel is how I share my home theater journey with others. Home theater can be a lonely and solitary hobby. An all-too-common experience is to install 10 theater seats and you're the only one in the room 99% of the time. But with At Home on YouTube I can share all of my projects and equipment reviews with other people who are as passionate about this hobby as I am. I take viewers along with me when I install and calibrate new equipment. I also work with many manufacturers to get brand-new equipment when it's first released to test out and share how it performs.
Why I chose SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution subwoofers:
When I added the Trinnov processor to my theater I immediately wanted to try out WaveForming. I began looking into subwoofer options because I needed at least 4 subs to take advantage of WaveForming. I was at CEDIA and saw the SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution subs and knew they would be perfect. They have the impact, performance, and form factor to fit my room. I am limited on space, so massive subs are out of the question. However, I want subs that will hit hard and deliver the thump we all want to feel in our theaters. The SB-5000's balance those two requirements perfectly. They provide that low end seat-shaking rumble while easily tucked into each corner of the room
What is the impact of adding SVS subwoofers compared to your previous setup?
The bass performance is now so much more controlled and dialed in. I am super picky when it comes to bass output. Even the slightest boominess or out-of-balance output is like nails on a chalkboard to me. The bass has to match the rest of the system perfectly. It can't be too underwhelming but it also can't dominate and overpower the rest of the frequency range. It has to be right there in that Goldilocks zone while also hitting hard and providing that seat-shaking rumble we all love. The combination of Trinnov Waveforming and 4 SVS SB-5000 R|Evolution subs is the perfect combination in my room.
Why run four subwoofers?
Trinnov Waveforming requires at least 4 subwoofers. In addition, 4 subwoofers provide the most seat-to-seat consistency. When only 1 or 2 subs are present, you can experience solid bass at one seat, but the other seats may suffer from weak output. By implementing 4 subs, you're ensuring you have the best chance for all viewers to experience solid bass output across the entire low-end frequency spectrum.
What is Trinnov WaveForming for subwoofers?
WaveForming is Trinnov's advanced approach to bass control that goes way beyond traditional subwoofer calibration. Instead of just EQ’ing subwoofers to sound flat at the listening position, it actively shapes how bass waves propagate through the room.
At low frequencies, your room dominates what you hear, often creating peaks, nulls, and muddy, uneven bass. WaveForming addresses this by using multiple subwoofers placed on the front and rear walls as a coordinated system, allowing it to generate a controlled bass wave that travels cleanly from the front to the back of the room.
As that wave reaches the rear wall, the system actively cancels the reflections before they can bounce back into the room and interfere with the sound. The result is a much more controlled and consistent low-frequency experience.
What are some of your favorite movies for showing off a subwoofer?
Bladerunner 2049 - the opening scene is my go-to demo track to really test how my system is performing. I want my house foundation to rumble.
Dune 2 - the worm riding scene is such an exhilarating demo track and is always a crowd pleaser. When I want to show off my system to people who are experiencing it for the first time this is the first track I show them. I love seeing the looks on their faces when they see and hear for the first time what a home theater can actually do.
Mad Max Fury Road - The entire war rig chase is one monster demo scene. The constant action and chaos will stretch any system. I love hearing how my setup handles this absolute banger of a movie.
Interstellar - The docking scene is pure anxiety + adrenaline. I honestly fear for the structural integrity of my house when I crank this one up. I always get complaints from my kids, two stories up, from this one. "Dad, it's shaking the whole house!"
Why is having an immersive home theater important to you?
Home theater is life!! There is simply nothing else that can compare to an immersive home theater where you fully and completely drop into a film because every last detail is perfect. The room, audio, and video all combine to block out the rest of the world, and it's just you, right there in the middle of what's happening on screen.
How did you discover SVS?
SVS is literally one of the first companies I learned about when I first got into this hobby. SVS is a trusted name in the enthusiast space across social media and online forums. I've had the pleasure of experiencing SVS firsthand at a few different trade shows, and they always impress.
Any additional thoughts to share with the SVS community?
Home theater is a journey. We speak of "end game" setups but the reality is there's always something that can be tweaked, improved, or adjusted. Always work towards making your theater better. But maintain balance. Don't let your love of the gear overshadow or replace the reason why the gear exists in the first place; to watch and enjoy movies. Thanks for watching!
