Optimal Sound Quality at More Listening Positions
Even with careful placement, a single subwoofer will not have an optimal frequency response at all listening positions in the room. In any given room location, a subwoofer has a unique 'modal pattern' (standing waves with peaks/nulls) and associated frequency response at the listening position. Listeners will often notice that moving even a few feet away from the 'sweet spot' will often result in notably worse bass sound quality. In some places, it will be overly boomy, in other places there will be a “suck-out” where the bass is noticeably less impactful. This is especially concerning when you have a large seating area.
With properly located dual subwoofers, the respective modal patterns will overlap, which greatly increases the sound wave density in the room. The result is a smoother frequency response at more listening positions in the room, with less potential for obvious peaks/nulls in the frequency response. Everyone gets the same room-energizing, heart-pounding listening experience no matter where they’re seated. This also makes it easier for auto-set-up programs like Audyssey MultEQ to equalize the subwoofer channel.
Effortless Bass With Greater Headroom
A popular phrase among the SVS Sound Experts team is "headroom has a quality all its own". Dual subwoofers will greatly increase the available system headroom, providing greater dynamic range, reduced output compression, lower distortion, and less potential for overdrive artifacts. In short, running duals will give you cleaner, more accurate bass at extreme drive levels. If you like to listen at reference levels and crave a lot of slam, impact and pressure from action and sci-fi movies or bass-heavy music, then dual subwoofers are an excellent option, and will provide effortless low frequency output on demanding passages.
Stereo Bass for Dedicated 2-Channel Systems
Discerning audiophiles and 2-channel purists know that directional bass cues are important to imaging and preserving the solidity of the soundstage. Using dual subwoofers in a dedicated 2-channel system will preserve stereo bass cues, and prevent the soundstage from collapsing, particularly when small bookshelf monitors with limited bass extension are being used. This makes for a more realistic and convincing audio experiences where you can pinpoint sounds in space and believe you are on stage or in the studio with an artist.
Harder To Localize
Even with a fairly deep speaker/subwoofer crossover frequency and the associated masking effects of the surround speakers, it's often possible to localize a single subwoofer in the room, particularly if it is not located on the front stage. When properly set-up, bass from a subwoofer should sound like it is coming from each individual speaker and not from a specific location. In comparison, dual subwoofers are nearly impossible to localize. Once listeners experience this immersive bass which seems to emanate from everywhere in the room, they never want to go back to a single subwoofer set-up.
Two Small Subwoofers Can Fit Where One Large Subwoofer Can’t
Many enthusiasts have their music and home theater systems located in mixed use living areas, where subwoofer performance must be balanced with décor and aesthetics. In situations like this, a single larger subwoofer, especially those with ported cabinets, might have too much visual impact in the room or might not even fit in the allocated areas. Conversely, two smaller subwoofers can offer similar performance, less visual impact, and can also fit into more locations in the room. If space is a concern, sealed cabinet subwoofers are generally a better option for discretion. Recommended Placement Locations for Dual Subwoofers
Based on our own extensive testing, and research done by the professional audio community, we recommend the following placement options for dual subwoofers:
Opposite diagonal front/rear corners
At the mid-points of the side walls
Front stage in the corners
Front stage flanking the center channel to the inside of the main speakers

I purchased the dual SB 4000’s to replace dual SB 3000 that I was pleased with for the most part that I am using with Rotel equipment (1590-350w per channel amp) and a pair of B&W 702 speakers. The sound is beautiful and the 3000’s could keep up both on volumes and punch. I run them at 50 Hz as suggested for the 4000’s in the speakers/sub information you guys provide, and could have stoped there and been happy.
I receive your emails and decided to upgrade to the speakers you said matched better to the 702’s especially at the discounted price. Purchased them in Early November wrestled them into place and proceeded to check them out.
To be frank, I was disappointed! The punch wasn’t there and the volume wasn’t there. I was ready too ship them back and save my $2600.00. I started looking at REL options and was going to make a move in that direction, I almost hit the purchase button and then I remembered the REL didn’t have a app to use with the sub so lots of adjustments require lots of trips back and forth to the sub, as well as the 45 day trial no questions asked return policy from SVS and the fact that all sound equipment has a burn in/warm up time frame. The 702’s needed it. The Amp, preamp and cd player needed it, so I stuck it out. About day 25 is when I noticed them coming around. I did change the setup away from the suggested point per the speaker match information. I don’t have the perfect set up in my home for acoustics do to a lager but beautiful fireplace in the…

I purchased the PB16 Ultra 4 weeks ago and love it but was missing the hard hitting feel it in your chest bass. I went ahead and added this one to it after watching a lot of reviews, it’s the perfect combination for my setup with the PB16. Now just waiting on the neighbors to call the cops lol

Love the deep, solid, clear base. Sturdy construction. Well packaged for drop ship to my house. Actually my second SB 4000. Sold previous house and left previous SB4000 with it. Smart product choice to support Blue tooth/phone app control for set up. If I used it, the front panel buttons / controls in the front are much better than dials and switches in the back. I'm using LFE connection connected to Marantz 7013. Sub base blends perfectly with my LCR speakers after Audyssey tuning.
I only wish you had descriptions in your manual about 'power on' option..... "Auto" is not described for example. what triggers it? audio signal from LFE? how long before speaker shuts off when in auto mode? I would rather not hook up '12v trigger' if auto mode handles it. I'm not sure the unit shuts off on auto since the LED front panel stays lit.

After a long wait finally my sb4000 arrive, very excited at first time. But at first month not work good for me, the sound far from what i expected. Low volume, poor bass, not blend with my towers. I did measurement with REW+UMIK, i got "almost" flat in my room, but i not happy with it. In fact i almost sell this subwoofer (i'm glad i don't do this).
What's wrong? because i try to make the graph flat that is my mistake (doing eq down the peaks frequency). Refer to the words from Ed Mullen (Senior Director SVS, thank you) "peaks/nulls are normal", i doing the opposite way with the eq, i let the peaks and eq up the nulls. is it flat ? no. But guess what? it makes the subwoofer from zero to hero. yes the winner!!
Now my sb4000 sound beyond what i expected, very powerfull but dissapear in my room and blend with my towers, even with my high sensitivity tower speakers (klipsch rf7iii), easily play around 110-115db. Now i can clearly hear bass at low volume even with poor quality recording cd's (mostly rock/metal genre from 90's).
Yes now i'm very happy with my sb4000, big smile on my face, enjoy every single track music with new experience. A single sb4000 is more than enough at my room. My room are 5.2 m x 4.2 m, mostly run with -11db volume on subwoofer, signal 2 volt from my preamp with XLR cable.
